Level 2 New Patient Office Visit (99202)

This is the second lowest level of care for a new patient in the office. Internists used this code for 5.25% of new office patients in 2015. Usually the presenting problems are of low to moderate severity. The Medicare allowable reimbursement (2017) for this code is $75.73 and it is worth 0.93 work RVUs according to the most recent CMS physician fee schedule.

The documentation for this encounter requires THREE out of THREE of the following :

1)  Expanded Problem Focused History
2)  Expanded Problem Focused Exam
3)  Straightforward Medical Decision-Making

Or 10 minutes spent face-to-face with the patient if coding based on time.  The appropriate documentation must be included.
