Rational Physician Coding for Outpatient E/M Services: If you want to understand outpatient E/M coding, start here.  This course reviews the E/M coding changes from 2021 and 2023, which are still in effect today.  Learn how to apply the most current E/M guidelines to the most common outpatient encounters.  This course will take you step-by-step through the process of quantifying your medical decision-making.  The updated rules for coding based  on time are also discussed.  Learn how to select the “correct” level of care for all encounters, then how to complete the documentation as expeditiously as possible to save time and ensure compliance.

Run time: 49:53             CME: 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™

New Office Patients: Learn how the most recent E/M coding updates will impact the documentation for new office patients.  Learn how to calculate your medical decision-making and add up the time spent so you can select the correct level of care for each visit.  The lowest level of care (99201) has been deleted, leaving us with four levels of care for these visits.  This course uses clinical examples to illustrate exactly how to recognize the correct level of care and then shows, step-by-step, how to document each visit.

Established Office Visits:  These are the most common E/M encounters on the planet.  Learn how the most recent E/M coding updates will affect the documentation for these visits.  Did you know that if you can recognize the clinical circumstances when it would be appropriate to go from a level-3 established office visit to a level-4 established office visit, you would increase your reimbursement by 41%?  This course shows how to add up your time and quantify your medical decision-making, so you can always select the correct level of care for these visits.  The most recent guidance on reporting prolonged services in conjunction with these encounters is also discussed.

Outpatient Consult Services:  Medicare may not pay for outpatient consult services, but some private insurers still do.  This course reviews the rules of the road for documenting and reporting outpatient consult services.  The level-1 outpatient consult code (99241) has been deleted, which leaves us with four levels of care for these services.  The previous requirements for specific levels of history and physical exam have been discarded.  The level of care is now driven by time or by the medical decision-making required for the visit.  These courses will show you how to calculate your medical decision-making so you can always select the correct code for these visits.  Using clinical examples, we illustrate how to document each level of care for outpatient consult services.

Emergency Department E/M Services:  This course outlines the documentation requirements for emergency department E/M services.  The previous requirements for specific levels of history and physical exam have been discarded.  The level of care is now driven solely by the medical decision-making needed for the visit.  This course will show you how to calculate your medical decision-making so you can always select the correct code for these services.  Using clinical examples, we illustrate how to choose the right code for each level of care and then how to perform and document a medically appropriate history and exam.
