E/M Consult services

Effective January 1, 2023, this information is no longer up-to-date. The material on this page covers only the 1995 and 1997 E/M guidelines and is no longer accurate. A new set of E/M guidelines was released in 2021, with some minor modifcations added for 2023. These new guidelines are now used to document all encounters in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. For the most recent E/M coding guidance, visit our home page here.

This video tutorial unravels the mysteries of performing and documenting E/M consult services. As if things weren't complicated enough already, on January 1, 2010, Medicare stopped paying for consult services completely. So what do you bill if you are asked to perform a "consult" on a Medicare patient in the office or in the hospital? This program includes a complete algorithm for billing for Medicare "consult" services in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. You will also see what documentation is needed when performing consults for private payers who still accept these codes. All levels of care are covered.

Two Versions are Included
1995 E/M Guidelines Edition Run Time 67:18
1997 E/M Guidelines Edition Run Time 65:46
